Rain gardens are the subject of a free workshop this morning for Boone County residents.
The workshop, which kicks off the Columbia/Boone County Rain Garden Program, is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. at Jefferson Farms and Gardens, 4800 E. New Haven Road. The program includes a 30-minute presentation followed by a brief question-and-answer period.
People who attend also can watch or help install a rain garden to capture water coming off a parking lot at Jefferson Farms and Gardens. Attendees are asked to dress accordingly for the hands-on activity.
The Columbia/Boone County Rain Garden Program is sponsored by the Missouri River Communities Network through a grant from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. Rain gardens capture rain water in a planted depression, reducing storm-water runoff that can carry sediment and other pollutants into local streams.
